Week 17
The more things change. The more they stay the same.

It’s Week 17 of ‘A View from Row Z’, your uninformed take on the various happenings in the CeeDee Compilation Bowl Fantasy League. Merry Christmas to everyone, I hope you all had a lot of fun and did all the Christmas cliche’s to death. It’s your last helping of Row-Z for the season, so savour it all.

It’s Week 17 and the final week. Andy and Rich face off in the 3rd place playoff and Dali and I faced each other in the final. We will start with the waivers. A quiet week to be honest. Dali made a morale boosting move for Tom Brady, looking to sprinkle some of that 7 time Super Bowl winner's magic into proceedings. He also picked up a TE, just to make sure I didn't. Dali was taking this week seriously. I made an inspired choice to bring in Rhamondre Stevenson in light of Jaylen Warren’s Questionable status. However, this move was also my undoing. More on that anon. Thanks to Matt Hulme for making a switch even though he had absolutely no skin in the game this week. Maybe just craving to be part of the action. Lastly, Richard made a switch for Jags QB Trevor Lawrence, jumping on that bandwagon I see. Anyways, to the reason we are all here, no not to laugh at me, but to openly discuss the results in a calm and objective manner.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Championship 3rd/4th Playoff
Game of Throws - L (128.75) // A Tadd McShonkey - W (152.87)
I literally paid 0% attention to this match up (sorry) as I was distracted elsewhere. Anyways, Rich really took this one seriously and came out swinging. Bijan Robinson is the big talking point, racking up the week's biggest individual score of 42.90pts. Trevor Lawerence was distant second to that score with 23.12pts, but to me, it seems like the matchup was over at half-time. Andy didn’t play this one poorly at all, 128.75pts would win most weeks and would have beaten both Dali and I had he had a better turn of fortune in the playoffs. Trey McBride was the top TE- with 23.6pts and the Joe Burrow / Ja’Marr Chase stack, brought in a combined 45.40pts. Which is a combo that usually buys you dinner and a victory speech. This week it could only afford a polite handshake and a “gg” in the chat. Both teams left points on the bench. Andy missed 27.6 optimal points, with Michael Wilson’s 19.9pts sitting unused, while Rich missed 20.5pts if the optimum lineup had been played. However, Rich’s bench mistake didn’t matter because Bijan had already crossed the finish line and Andy’s did matter, because when you’re already running into a 150pts+ score, you don’t get to waste opportunities. Rich walks away with the bronze medal, a blowout win and the feeling that everything clicked. Andy finishes his season with the classic fantasy heartbreak, a strong week, a tough loss, and the eternal question of “what if I’d started the other guy?”
Well done gents. Mighty good game. See you next season.
Championship Game
Third Time Charmers - L (110.53) // Dali’s Salvadors - W (111.97)
I said it earlier in the season. Sometimes I really enjoy writing this. But today, it’s absolutely not fun for me at all. I’ve been through the 5 stages of grief. Denial - It didn’t happen. Anger - It was someone else’s fault. Probably Rich’s. Bargaining - If only I had done this or that. Depression - Deep deep deep sadness at my loss. Acceptance - Well done to Dali. You bastard.
Those of you hoping to have a blockbuster finish to this league, must have been so disappointed. It seemed that neither myself or Dali really wanted to win it. Despite some kind words from Dali about how he would concede early etc etc, the whole thing can really boil down to one, slightly panicked, not thought through decision at around 17.55pm on Sunday 28th December. I will hold my hands up, my awesomely assembled squad of Avengers like power came crashing down, by my own ineptitude. I got cold feet. Newly acquired Rhamondre Stevenson came in at RB, with a very easy game against the Jets to cover Jaylen Warren, who despite a solid season looked like he would miss or at best be patchy in week 17. Upon opening the Sleeper app on Sunday evening, I saw he was cleared to play and ‘should’ be involved. I made the switch, sticking to what I knew and it was the move that killed me. Warren hauled in a miserly 5.40pts and Stevenson had a season's best points return of 27.20pts. And let’s not even mention Darren Waller. FUCK. The rest as they say is history, it was an extremely tight affair and came down to which Rams player would score best. Now I think everyone in the league would have bet sizable sums of money that Puka would bring it home and score more than 1.44pts over Kyren Williams. But no. Puka, despite a last minute, 4th quarter TD, only got 15.70pts and Williams sauntered into the final whistle with 16pts. It was done. At the third time of trying, I had missed my chance again. Well done to Dali, his first win in our league, but his 3rd overall because, as he informed me this morning, he had won his ‘other league’ twice before. Cool cool. Cool. Cool. So there you have it. After his disastrous 2024 season, a threat of quitting the league, he has turned it all around to win our humble league in the narrowest of victories.
Me. Well, I will be back next year having learned a little bit more and if luck allows, I will be back for a fourth final and another crack of the whip. You’ve all been warned - it’s serious again next year and I need to unlock my Week 17 curse.
So that was Week 17 and the season now drawn to a close. Dali is our new and deserved Champion. Mike is our unfortunately deserving Shit King and Rich wears the biggest smile, knowing that if he couldn’t win it, then at least I didn’t. The task of renaming the league has already been taken care of - thanks Dali, time to remove those group Admin rights - and the icon has been changed to boot. Perfect stuff.
A little admin for this last part, thanks to everyone for playing again this year and for making it a fun one. Yet again these reviews are fun to do and I hope you guys continue to enjoy it, especially Reece, because you above anyone has really taken a bashing this year. Thanks to Matt Hulme and Dali for standing in at various times this year to write this report and thanks Andy for being my ever patient copy editor (except this week as you are on holiday). Much appreciated. I hope we continue on as a group next year, but if you are feeling like bowing out, please let me know, so I can begin the search for a replacement or convince you to stay and fulfil your destiny of winning against me in the final.
